About Us

A Legacy of Love for Frenchies

Meet BlueHaven French Bulldogs

We are BlueHaven French Bulldogs (sometimes shown as Blue Haven French Bulldogs), and we specialize in breeding and selling high-quality French Bulldog puppies, i.e., Frenchie puppies. We are very experienced Frenchie breeders whose main goal is to improve the breed through very careful and selective breeding. The French Bulldog is both a dwarf (chondrodystrophic) and a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed, so indiscriminate breeding can lead to a lot of health issues. This is of particular concern these days, as the popularity of this breed has resulted in a lot of new puppy mills and inexperienced breeders, leading to a lot of poor-quality dogs being introduced into the market. Of course, these new breeders will rarely be around if problems do arise with their puppies.

BlueHaven French Bulldogs is here for the long haul, and we do stand behind our puppies.  BlueHaven is operated by a mother/daughter team, along with our spouses, Bick and Brent, who all have a great love for the French Bulldog. Two sons and their families are also involved in the business.  Lacey is a stay-at-home mom of five (ages 10 to 22) and Donna is a stay-at-home grandmother, who, along with spouses and children/grandchildren, devote endless time and attention to our wonderful Frenchies. It is truly a family affair.

Our families have always had dogs for the love, entertainment, and companionship that they provide – Labs, Golden Retrievers, English and Irish Setters, Cocker Spaniels, Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Maltese, Poodles, Beagles, Dachshunds, and others – and we have loved them all, but, when we were introduced to the French Bulldog, we knew that this would be the last breed of dog we would ever own (except for a few hunting dogs owned by the boys :-).

When we met and purchased our first Frenchie well over a decade ago, the French Bulldog was nowhere to be seen on the list of the most popular dog breeds in the United States.  We fell in love with our little Bryn, and we decided we would breed her in order to obtain a litter of puppies for the family.  Everyone who met our Frenchies fell in love with them, and this led to us starting a hobby breeding business, as people would ask us, “where can I buy a French Bulldog” or “where can I find Frenchies for sale”?  At that time, there were very few reputable Frenchie breeders around, and it was not easy to find a high-quality puppy for a reasonable price.  We decided that we wanted to help change that.

Over the past several years, the French Bulldog (Frenchie) has continued to gain in popularity, steadily climbing up the chart.  In 2021 it climbed to second on the list, behind only the Labrador Retriever.  In 2022, the French Bulldog ousted the Lab from the top spot, where it had resided for decades.  We like to think that responsible breeders, as we believe we are, have helped the French Bulldog gain that status.  High-quality Frenchies definitely deserve to be at the top of the list, as they are the sweetest, funniest, most loveable dogs imaginable.

However, there is a downside to their popularity.  It has brought a lot of backyard breeders and new puppy mills into the market, who are mainly looking to make a quick buck.  They breed whatever dogs they have available, regardless of genetics and suitability for breeding.  As a result, a lot of poor-quality dogs are entering the market, and these upstart breeders are rarely there to deal with any issues.  Even in the best of circumstances, when only high-quality dogs are bred, that have been DNA tested, and are free from any significant health concerns, occasionally a health issue will come up.  If this happens, you want to be working with a reputable Frenchie breeder who will stand behind their puppies, as does BlueHaven French Bulldogs.

With our large family, we try to ensure that each of our Frenchies get all of the love and attention he or she deserves. They are truly our canine children. All of our Frenchies are well socialized from birth by the kids and their friends, not to mention us and the guys. When our Frenchies are not inside with us, they live with one or two buddies in climate-controlled kennels with large outside play areas, so they all are well trained to use doggie doors and they get plenty of exercise and canine companionship.  Our puppies are raised inside our large mothers’ room, which is part of Lacey’s home, until the time they leave to go to their new families. They are let out to play and engage with other puppies every day.  To put it plainly, they get all the socialization they can handle, and they get a little spoiled in the process :-).

Our main focus is to breed for quality, and color is a secondary consideration.   Our goal is to improve the breed by only mating dogs that are in high conformance with the breed standard in conformation, health, and temperament. We do not breed dogs that have any significant health issues, i.e., joint or back issues, allergies, brachycephalic syndrome (breathing issues), etc., so we rarely have significant health issues with our puppies.  When we do, we try to be more than fair with our clients.  You can see our guarantee on this website under Owner Info > Contract, and scroll down.  This is the least we will do if a problem arises.

Occasionally, we will breed one of our females to an exceptional male that we do not own, but almost all of our puppies come from carefully selected parings of our own Frenchies, most of whom are several generation BlueHaven.` We always have well over a dozen males with a variety of genetics, so we have a number of options for each female that comes into heat, depending on the types of puppies we need, in order to meet clients’ wishes.

We can’t decide which color of French Bulldog we like the best.  There are so many gorgeous Frenchie colors, and we love them all.  We breed all of the standard Frenchie colors, i.e., black brindles, red and golden fawns, sables, and creams, including pieds in all of these colors.  We also breed for all of the rarer colors that are created by genes which naturally exist within the Frenchie population, i.e., the various blues, chocolates, and lilacs, along with pieds in each of these colors.   We do not produce merles or long-haired Frenchies, as these were probably created by genes which have been introduced into the Frenchie gene pool from other breeds.

All of the more rare colors (including piedness) are created from recessive genes, so a puppy must inherit a copy from both mom and dad.  All blues have a double copy of the blue (dilute) gene, the chocolates have a double copy of the coco gene, and lilacs have a double copy of both.  We love the rare and beautiful pure coats, i.e., pure blacks, pure blues, pure chocolates, and pure lilacs, and these puppies have a double copy of the recessive black gene, in addition to double copies of their color genes.  The rare and stunning Frenchie puppies with tan points have a double copy of the tan points gene, or a copy of the tan points gene and a copy of the recessive black gene, in addition to their color genes. We love all of the Frenchie colors, including the rare ones, and because others apparently do as well, we breed for a wide variety of French Bulldog colors and color patterns. We have observed that color and pattern is strictly an individual preference, and these have no impact on the health or well-being of Frenchies. Whatever your particular preference, we will produce puppies to match your desires.

Check out the beautiful colors that Frenchies come in under ‘FAQs’, and you can see more examples of the different types of puppies we have been producing under Our Frenchies > Former Puppies, and scroll down to the various colors.

Just wanted to let you know we're in love with Hank (previously Robbie). He's fitting perfectly into our family, with a great personality. He sleeps well in his crate and got a clean bill of health from the vet. Thanks for your support in making this process smooth. He's the best early Christmas gift!

Felix (formerly Blade) and Chloe (formerly Cambree) are thriving at home for nearly a month. Chloe, smaller at 8.6 lbs, playfully teases her bigger brother Felix (10.2 lbs). Chloe's green eyes shine, while Felix's are greenish-yellow. Both pups are delightful, and more pictures will come as they grow.
