Plants that are Harmful to Your Frenchie

When a new pet parent gets a Frenchie puppy from one of our litters, we want them to do everything possible to keep their bundles of joy safe and healthy. Of course, they need to have a safe and comfortable environment, nutritious food, and lots of clean water, but they also need to be kept safe from some common dangers.

Did you know that your home environment could be harmful to your Frenchie? One of the most common dangers is plants. Studies on animal poisoning by exposure to plants show that dogs are the most commonly affected pets. A vet could help if your Frenchie contacts or ingests harmful plants. But the best way is to keep your furry buddy away from harm when at home and in other locations.

Ornamental plants

Sago Palm

These beautiful ornamental palms from Japan are popular in warmer parts of the country like Florida and California. However, they are toxic to dogs. What makes it particularly dangerous is the allure it has on dogs. Some dogs find the scent irresistible and could chew and swallow some. It could cause vomiting, diarrhea, tummy pain, liver failure, and in some cases, it could be fatal.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is native to the warm, tropical, and subtropical regions of South America and the Caribbean. The Amaryllis is a popular ornamental plant among beginner gardeners because it is simpler to care for and keep in your home or garden.

If you want to venture into flower gardening and start with the Amaryllis, take care not to place it within your Frenchie’s reach. The whole plant, especially the bulbs, is toxic. It can cause excessive drooling, lethargy, and tremors. It also affects the gastrointestinal system.

English Ivy

You may want to have an elaborate and attractive hedge around your home, but if you own a Frenchie, remember that the leaves and berries of the English Ivy are toxic to dogs. If your Frenchie chews on the foliage, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, and abdominal pain. You may notice if your dog has been venturing into the bushes because you may notice a contact rash.

Tulips

Tulips are popular and loved by nearly everyone. Due to their popularity, tulips are available year-round and in all climates. But having them at home could be harmful to your Frenchie. Tulips affect the gastrointestinal system and central nervous systems. Your dog could experience stomach issues, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. Excessive quantities could be fatal.

Oleander (Nerium Oleander)

Oleander is a popular ornamental plant hailing from the Mediterranean region. It is popular because it produces attractive foliage and flowers, and it can survive extreme conditions like unfavorable soils. But it is toxic to many domestic animals including dogs. Small quantities of this plant can cause gastrointestinal disturbance, affect mood (cause depression), lowering of blood sugar levels, interrupt heart rhythm, and could even be fatal.

Plants in your kitchen garden

Tomato Plant

During the summer, many people like tomatoes in their kitchen gardens. If you have a Frenchie, ensure it stays clear from the garden. Ingesting tomato plants can cause disturbance of the gastrointestinal system, weakness, drowsiness, slow heart rate, and confusion.

Aloe Vera

Aloe veras are popular, especially among people who fancy natural remedies for common ailments. It’s excellent for skin care and would care. However, this healing plant could harm your Frenchie. It affects the gastrointestinal system, causes tremors, and blocks the central nervous system.

Marijuana (Cannabis Sativa)

With the increased legalization of weed, many people are cultivating it in their homes and yards. If you have cannabis at home, keep in mind that it could be toxic for your Frenchie. Consuming small quantities can cause lethargy, anxiety, and urinary incontinence. If your dog consumes large quantities, it could result in seizures, comas, or fatalities.

Garlic and Onion

All plants in the Allium species (such as garlic and onions) are toxic to dogs. If your Frenchie consumes significant quantities, it could affect the red blood cells. Some of the symptoms are severe weakness, irregular breathing rhythm, and your dog could pass red-colored urine.

Citrus plants and the peelings like grapefruit, oranges, lemons
Corn on the cob. There is a risk that your Frenchie could choke on the cob.
